An article in the Journal of Sociology tackles the dilemma of the escalating chase for formal credentials and unfulfilled employment outcomes.
Jenny Chesters and Johanna Wyn’s paper: ‘Chasing rainbows: How many educational qualifications do young people need to acquire meaningful, ongoing work?’ tackles this change.
People will need life-long learning just to stay employed: “Rather than chasing rainbows, new labour market entrants may accept that the constant upgrading of educational qualifications is necessary to maintain employment in any form and in any field..”
Micro credentials, skill badges and skill sets will be the enablers in the gig economy. Sector Four will eventually dominate this market as higher education and VET struggle to adapt to disruption.
